Our Client’s Vision
The Play Village was born out of a parent’s desire to escape the loud, high-energy, physically demanding soft play centres that often leave children more revved up than when they arrived. Instead, they wanted to create an alternative space where toddlers, pre-school, and primary school children can let their imaginations run wild through the magic of role-play.
They also wanted adults to have a stress-free time, where they don’t have to worry about the welfare of their children. A couple of hours where you can relax, or play with your child – in a friendly, safe, clean, and calm environment.
Why The Play Village Created DKMD Role Play Villages Ltd
The marketplace options available at the time were limited – both in terms of achievable cost and genuine operational understanding – so the owners made the strategic decision to establish Role Play Villages Ltd and design and build their own centre engaging trusted local expertise and craftsmen.
This hands on experience gave them a rare opportunity to understand, in real depth, the challenges that venue owners face when creating a role play environment from the ground up.
“Forming a new company to design and build our own Role Play Village gave us a fabulous opportunity to understand the challenges that other venue owners could face in their design and build projects first hand. It put us in a unique position to consult with and advise future clients with a genuine understanding of what they are going through.”
– Kate Wright, Former Managing Director, The Play Village Ltd
Our Brief – A Premium Experience for Children and Adults
The Play Village was conceived as a premium play café centred around the magic of role play – a locally focused, beautifully crafted environment where children could explore real life scenarios through a series of bespoke, hand built role play pods.
The brief called for a layout that offered generous circulation space, clear sightlines from the café for parents and carers, and an operationally robust design that would be easy to maintain day to day.
Alongside standard play sessions, the space also needed to include a dedicated private hire area for parties and community groups, creating a flexible environment that could support both everyday family visits and special events.
Every element needed to balance play value with practical functionality, creating a welcoming, high quality destination that felt both inspiring for children and effortless for staff to run.
Designing the Role Play Village
The Play Village was created within an existing industrial building, transforming a raw, functional shell into a warm, characterful and premium role play café. The project required a full interior refit – including kitchens, reception area, toilets and baby change facilities in additional to the role-play village, café and party space – all planned to support smooth daily operations.
The result was a complete reinvention of the building, crafted to feel inviting, imaginative and effortless to run.
“Our Design Team’s attention to detail was exceptional, particularly in maximising the space available within the building. They took time to understand what we were trying to achieve and offered practical and affordable solutions to any construction challenges we faced.”
The Finished Environment
When The Play Village opened its doors, the space immediately delivered the premium, story rich experience the owners envisioned.
The robust, child safe construction and high quality finishes created a dependable foundation, complemented by inspiring graphic design, bespoke theming and a wide range of practical props that brought every role play scenario to life.
These carefully curated details elevated play value, encouraged engagement, and significantly increased dwell time for families.
The durable craftsmanship and practical layout resulted in an environment that not only looked beautiful on day one but has continued to attract repeat visits and build a loyal community around the play café several years on.
“Our construction team shared my absolute passion for quality and attention to detail. They understood from day one that creating a safe, child centred environment isn’t just about meeting standards — it’s about building with care, intention and respect for the families who will use the space. Their commitment to getting every element right made the whole project feel truly special.”
